Last evening I watched the Republican candidate for Virginia governor, Bob McDonnell. He appears to be a fairly likable guy and based on what little I’ve heard, appears to be the better candidate. But why, oh why, does he have to answer like the way he did? When the interviewers questioned him about his college thesis about why women should stay at home, he decides to completely avoid the question by talking about his daughters and his five commissioners when he was state Attorney General. Candidate McDonnell, please answer the question. Then they proceeded to ask him about which area he thought President Obama was doing well in. He starts off by saying he is a great speech maker! Wow, really? Fortunately, he kind of came back to say that the president was taking on some real huge problems head on within the first few months of his administration. Kind of save himself there. Then they asked him about why Republican congressmen and others have vitiated the atmosphere for political discourse. Again he went into a kind of statement politicians especially reserve for these kinds of situations. Turned it back on the questioners by saying that the Democrats do it too. Candidate McDonnell for the second time – please answer the question!!.
And the final part. He smiled through it all. Please, when you are talking about grave matters, you can dispense with the smiling. But, in the end, I hope he wins. Because his opponent gives me the creeps.
